All the way from Copenhagen, David Zahle from BIG will host a lecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the TU Delft.
You might know them from the Mountain Dwellings (MTN) in Drestad, their publication 'Yes is more' (YIM), or maybe from their more recent project: Denmark's first new mosque, part of the Battery complex (BAT).

Touch can be interpreted in the literary, but also in the figurative sense of Feeling. How do you feel about the space you´re standing in right now? Using recent projects by CEPEZED, Ronald Schleurholts will discuss both these interpretations and the effect they have on Space.

Through our senses we interpret the world around us. An almost constant stream of information is fed to us through all kinds of different channels. And although these channels can be designed, they are often neglected. With the goal to help designers understand the link between all of the human senses and usability - and to incorporating it in their design - Rick Schifferstein helped to create Multi-Sensory Design (MSD).

Lecture on how light and lighting can be integrated and incorporated into urban planning - the identity of a city enhanced through use of perceptual psychology, technical developments and architecture.

The design of sound is often neglected when concepts for new products are developed. This often leads to a perceived mismatch between the visual and auditory experience of a product. As a result, the total experience is not the one a designer is trying to achieve. Elif Özcan will be talking about why sound is an important and how we can use it to create a better design.

When designing a building the obvious focus is towards the visual. Use of color, lines of sight, materials, tools of the architect seem to lie mainly in the area of 'seeing'. Yet all the senses play a role in the perception of a city, a building, a
space. In the introduction lunch lecture Richelle de Jong of DP6 architecture studio will talk about their search of use and meaning of the other human senses in the experience of architecture.

On the 11th of February Andrea Caputo will come to tell about art in the city. A lecture about street-art in the urban space.

Abstract
In the contemporary metropolis marks are uncontrollable, differing in their form of expression and tools used. In addition to sprayed writings, heritage of the Seventies, in the last decade a further variation of interventions has been recorded, caused by two new forms of experimentation: the use of new instruments, alternative to spray colours, and a formal research that has gradually abandoned the study of lettering and graffiti tags.

We could think of an evolution of the Graffiti scene into a more generic form of “Street Art”, where the obsessive repetition of tags has turned into more eclectic and complex protocols.

In-between State is a conference dedicated to those expressive phenomena that arise from street cultures and choose the urban landscape as their ideal context. The lecture will offer some clues to decode aesthetic rules, dynamics and relations established between those who work in the public realm and the nature of the contaminated site; analogies and differences between Writing and parallel realities will be recurring themes, aimed at investigating the aesthetic codes of the contemporary city, discovering some of the most important authors and offering a reading of places seemingly anonymous, though often vital and necessary for the survival of street cultures.

Andrea Caputo
In concurrence to his studies in Graphic Design and Architecture, collaborations with Stefano Boeri Milano (2002-2005) and Moneo - Brock Madrid (2006-2008) , since 1993 Andrea Caputo has under taken a personal study of street culture and the consequent social and aesthetic influences, actively participating in the International Writing movement with the publication of editorial and expository projects.

Andrea Caputo is the author of All City Writers, an anthology above the Graffiti movement in Europe. The volume, published in 2009 by Kitchen 93 / Critiques Livres - Paris, tries to document the evolution and the consequences of a countercultural phenomenon that over the course of a few decades provoked a change in the aesthetics and the rules of communication of modern day society.

Maar Cruz y Ortiz is meer dan alleen de architect van het Rijksmuseum. Zo was het bureau onderwerp van verschillende tentoonstellingen, boeken en ontving een groot aantal prijzen. In 2004 werd het gehele oeuvre geprezen en ontvingen zij de Culture Award van de José Manuel Lara Foundation. Ook hier zal Muriel Huisman op ingaan.

Het had in 2008 al open moeten zijn, het nieuwe Rijksmuseum. Het grootste museum van Nederland met één van de belangrijkste kunstcollecties ter wereld staat echter nog vol in de steigers. Het zal nog zeker vier jaar duren voordat bezoekers het nieuwe ontwerp van het wereldberoemde Cruz y Ortiz kunnen bewonderen.

Zoals te zien in een documentaire bij het programma Zembla aan het begin van dit jaar, zijn er vele partijen die een rol spelen in dit grote projecten. Igor Santhagens zal ingaan op de rol van het museum en wat deze verbouwing voor het Rijksmuseum zelf betekend.

In the new pantheon (release party 20th of march) you 'll find an interview with Welzbacher and on the 7th of April he will give a lecture about his work as a writer and critic and answer your questions. Welzbacher will tell us about his recently published book Euro Islam. But also about his job as a writer.

Loozekoot will expose UNStudio processes and projects.

Anachronistisch huis

Joost Conijn (Amsterdam, 1971) verwierf als kunstenaar internationale bekendheid met zijn zelfgebouwde vliegtuig waarmee hij opsteeg in de woestijn. Vervolgens maakte hij de film Hout Auto over zijn reis door Oost-Europa met een houten auto die ook hout gebruikte als brandstof. Vorig jaar toonde museum Boijmans van Beuningen een overzicht van zijn werk.

Joosts volgende project is het bouwen van een anachronistisch huis. Samen met de TU Delft zal hiervoor een low-tech lab worden opgezet. Doel is om van daaruit samen met studenten na te denken, te werken en opnieuw te definiëren wat een huis kan zijn: een huis als laboratorium, onconventioneel denken over al haar onderdelen, functies en aspecten.

Op 2 maart organiseert Stylos een bijeenkomst waarbij Joost het project samen met rector Jacob Fokkema zal toelichten aan geïnteresseerden. Het project zal langer lopen en studenten kunnen maximaal 15 studiepunten krijgen voor hun hulp, als stageproject.

Alan Dempsey


Alan Dempsey's interests lies in the intersection between architecture and technique, and the emerging role of digital design processes. He has worked with the avant-garde design practices of Farjadi Architects and Future Systems in London and for the research network OCEAN.

Recently Alan Dempsey founded the architecture and design practise NEX in Londen. In addition to his work in practice, he is currently co-director of the FAB research cluster at the Architectural Association, which facilitates research projects on novel design and fabrication technologies.

Hij komt spreken over zijn ervaringen als adviseur bij Atelier Rijksbouwmeester. Hoe pakt hij als beeldend kunstenaar stedenbouwkundige ontwerpopgaven aan?

De stemming zit er meteen goed in als ir. Masayuki Tajima de ongeveer 25 deelnemers aan de lunchlezing 'Food Design' voor aanvang de zaal uitstuurt om hun handen te wassen. We gaan namelijk sushi maken en dat moet met schone handen. Als iedereen weer op zijn plek zit, neemt Tajima, alias Taji The Chef, ons in vogelvlucht mee door de geschiedenis en cultuur van Japan, zijn geboorteland. Hij koppelt zijn introductie aan food design, het onderwerp van deze door studievereniging Stylos georganiseerde lezing bij Bouwkunde. Via het Japanse klimaat - van Scandinavisch tot Hawaïaans - de rijke natuur, het shintoïsme, een mooi plaatje van Fuji Mountain en de invloed van het Westen komt de 36-jarige bouwkunde-alumnus bij het eigenlijke onderwerp van zijn lezing: eten. 'The Chef' werd als klein jongetje al door zijn moeder aan het werk gezet in de keuken, en eten is de rode draad in zijn leven geworden. Ook tijdens zijn studie architectuur aan Berkeley University in San Francisco was hij altijd in de weer met koken. Etentjes voor medestudenten, cateringklussen maar ook 'food guerrilla'-tactieken zoals voedsel uitdelen op straat. Tajima noemt zichzelf food culture specialist en bedacht als bouwkundestudent allerlei food-gerelateerde voorwerpen, zoals een draagbare keukentafel, modulaire eetsetjes van karton en een portable keuken, compleet met ingebouwd licht en watervoorziening. Iets is niet snel te gek voor hem. Hij deed mee aan de Dutch Design Week waar hij een ruimte creëerde om te eten. 'Bubble' was het thema en dat uitte zich bijvoorbeeld in tomatensoep met crispy zaadjes, prikwater en natuurlijk champagne. Hij verkoopt nano bubble water, Japans mineraalwater, dat volgens hem een positief effect heeft op de gezondheid en het wegnemen van stress. En hij zit vol wilde plannen, zoals koken in de Rotterdamse metro.

"I strongly believe in food", vat hij kernachtig samen. Over de Nederlandse eetcultuur is hij niet te spreken, zeker in vergelijking tot andere Europese landen als Frankrijk en Italië. Maar hij doet zijn best om urban slow food in Nederland te promoten. "Food is fun", zegt hij, doordat mensen samen komen en samen eten klaarmaken. En dat is precies wat we gaan doen. 'The Chef' haalt bakken met vis, sushirijst en gesneden groenten tevoorschijn. De bouwkundestudenten staan te popelen om te beginnen. Alsof het gaat om een workshop ontwerpen, knutselen ze kunstige gebouwen van sushi in elkaar. Tajima geniet zichtbaar en moedigt de studenten aan om er wat moois van te maken. Nadat iedereen elkaars fraaie composities heeft bewonderd, kan er . eindelijk - gegeten worden. Itadakimasu.

De Delftse natuurkundige Theo Jansen, die met zijn fascinatie voor de PVC buis nieuwe levensvormen creëert, krijgt de laaste jaren steeds meer internationale faam door zijn strandbeesten.

"One afternoon I went to the Gamma, the one here in Delft, and I looked at this yellow (cheese colored) electro-tube". Vanaf dat moment besloot hij een middag zich volledig op de PVC buis te concentreren. Dat is inmiddels 18 jaar geleden. De door de wind gedreven 'skeletten' zijn uitgegroeid tot een echt levenswerk. Ze zijn uitgerust met een binaire stappenteller, watersensoren en een windanker. Het elegante loopmechanisme kan zowel achteruit als vooruit lopen en de energie die de vleugels opwekken kan worden opgeslagen in pet flessen voor noodgevallen zoals opkomend vloed. Klinkt indrukwekkend, zeker als je bedenkt dat alle onderdelen mechanisch zijn en bij wijze van spreken uit touw en PVC zijn samengesteld.

Theo is een fantast. "I dream about my animals, offcourse, but I do not fall in love with them". Zijn nalatenschap ziet hij het liefst als een kudde strandbeesten die de huidige natuur aanvult. Een kudde waarbij het beest met de meest bewandelde kilometers zich 'voortplant'. Zijn nieuwe natuur is zijn kunstwerk, hoewel hij zweert geen esthetische keuzes te maken. "Every designers choice I make is purely an engineering decision". Elk onderdeel van het beest is functioneel voor zijn prestaties. Zo heeft het loopmechanisme zijn elegante loopwijze gekregen van de computer. En is de ruggengraat een vakwerk. Toch roepen de strandstallages het beeld op van krabachtige organismen, schaal 100 op 1. Theo's beesten vormen zich naar de elementen die ze moeten trotseren. Ze zijn gemaakt om zelfstandig te overleven, misschien doen ze dat over 20 jaar ook wel.

Met zijn 165m hoogte wordt de Maastoren op de Kop van Zuid in 2009 het nieuwe hoogste gebouw van Nederland. Met de ontwikkeling van deze toren zal de stad Rotterdam haar naam als hoogbouw- en architectuurstad kracht bijzetten. Reden genoeg om dit nieuwe icoon eens onder de aandacht te brengen op deze faculteit.
Gestart als een project van twee studenten uit de Stylos Platform commissie van afgelopen jaar, is de opzet van een lezing dit jaar doorgezet met de toevoeging van een tentoonstelling en een bezoek aan de daadwerkelijke bouwplaats.
Ter introductie van de lezing op 5 maart stond er vanaf de laatste week van februari een tentoonstelling op de overloop naast Stylos. Deze tentoonstelling, verzorgd door het architectenbureau Dam & Partners, bestond uit een groot aantal panelen voorzien van professionele renders van de Maastoren in zijn toekomstige situatie, gedetailleerde plattegronden en bouwkundige details. Daarbij was het ‘centerpiece’ van de tentoonstelling uiteraard de zeer gedetailleerde maquette.

De lezing was opgezet om studenten een duidelijk beeld te geven van wat er nou allemaal komt kijken bij het ontwikkelen en bouwen van zo’n enorm gebouw in Nederland. Om deze reden waren er vier verschillende partijen uitgenodigd: Diederik Dam namens Dam & Partners (architectenbureau), Dick Westerduin namens Stevens
van Dijck (bouwmanager/adviseur), Jan van der Windt namens Zonneveld (ingenieursbureau) en Arjen Lettinga namens Deloitte (de huurder).

Het interessante aan deze opzet was dat we in korte tijd vier heel verschillende verhalen over hetzelfde project ter gehoren kregen. Waar Diederik Dam de reeks afschopte met een verhaal over de
stedenbouwkundige situatie en de ontwerpoverwegingen die aan het project ten grondslag gelegen hadden, kregen we van Jan van der Windt een heel technisch verhaal over de krachtwerking in hoogbouw zoals de Maastoren. Hierna legde Dick Westerduin ons haarfijn uit waar een bouwadviseur zich precies mee bezighoud, om ons vervolgens te overweldigen met een tweetal video animaties waar de TOI-boys nog wat van kunnen leren!

Afsluitend kwam nog Arjen Lettinga aan het woord, om uit te leggen hoe Deloitte als huurder bij het ontwerpproces betrokken is geweest. Uit de vragenronde die daarna volgde bleek al snel dat juist tussen deze laatste partij en de architect wat wrijving bestaat. Bijvoorbeeld het feit dat Deloitte een externe interieurarchitect in de arm heeft genomen, terwijl Dam & Partners die capaciteiten ook in huis heeft, zorgt nog altijd voor onbegrip. De vraag of er bij de Maastoren specieke maatregelen genomen zijn, met betrekking op constructie, om het gebouw voor te bereiden op mogelijke terroristische aanvallen, werd beantwoord met het feit dat het nederlandse bouwbesluit eigenlijk niet is voorbereid op dit soort hoogbouw. De constructie is echter wel zodanig uitgevoerd dat omringende draagstructuur krachten op kan vangen zodra een kolom weg zou vallen. Met deze geruststellende berichten werd de lezing afgerond. Aansluitend zijn we een week later nog met een groep studenten de bouwplaats gaan bezoeken.

Thomas Heinrich von der Dunk is een cultuurhistoricus en publicist. Sinds 2002 is hij werkzaam als freelance publicist en politiek commentator. In de wereld van de historici is hij een opmerkelijke verschijning door zijn vaak opvallende kledingkeuze en door zijn karakteristieke stemgeluid. In 2005 schreef Von der Dunk in het kader van de Week van de Geschiedenis het boekje "Buren? Een alternatieve geschiedenis van Duitsland/Nederland".
