Important public events, such as royal weddings, funerals, urban festivities and other mass venues form important, memorable cultural ‘markers’.
With this in mind, major institutions and centres of education frequently organise feasts and events. Examples of such festive initiatives that still speak to the imagination are the legendary multimedia celebrations at the Bauhaus, a synergy of decor, costume, light, image and sound.

In this way memories of special experiences and organised feasts during one’s student years can become lifelong, treasured memories and inspirations for further festive initiatives.

This holds particularly for students of Architecture in Delft, at a faculty with a long-standing tradition of spectacular BK Beats events, organised by Stylos.
The new BK City environment - and especially the Southern Atrium (or Form Studies Hall) - has a phenomenal potential as a setting for captivating performances during BK Beats.

Here lies a challenge that should not be missed: to transform the existing space with visual and material means into a unique festive environment!

To realise this potential a special exercise is launched - under the guidance of Form Studies mentor Jeroen van de Laar - ‘BK BEATS ENVIRONMENT’.

This free-choice exercise lasts approximately 1.5 quarters.

The course code is AR0017.

Number of study credits: 6 ects.

Contact: 4 contact hours on Wednesdays plus individual and group study and activity.

Education Method

This elective course comprises several design, development and realisation components:

- Brainstorming, idea development, spatial and architectural analysis of the Southern Atrium;
- Concept development using drawings, collages and 3D models, physical and virtual;
- Determination of definitive designs, choices of materialisation and practical realisation;
- Transformation of plans into a special environment during the BK Beats event;
- Presentation, evaluation and documentation of results and findings.

Assessment

In the BK Beats Environment course, students will develop, realise, evaluate and document the evolvement and impact of a spectacular, festive spatial Environment.

Assessment will be on the basis of individual and group input, quality of conceptual development, visualisation and communication of proposals and findings plus evaluation of the practical realisation and functionality as a sensory environment during the BK Beats 2012 event.

Het thema van deze editie was Seven Sins. de 5 zalen en de lounge in de straat waren omgetoverd tot plaatsen waar de verschillende zondes stuk voor stuk uitgebeeld werden. Nieuw dit jaar was de fifth stage: een donkere 'dungeon of desire' alwaar verschillende DJ's je voorzien van een flinke portie house en electro!

Met optredens van o.a. The Flexican, Ricky Rivaro, GEM, Illicit en Wicked Jazz Sounds was het weer een groot feest!

Door de brand was dit tevens de laatste editie die in het gebouw van Bakema heeft plaatsgevonden. Uiteraard zullen we ons best doen om over twee jaar BkBeats weer doorgang te laten vinden in het nieuwe Bouwkunde faculteitsgebouw aan de Julianalaan.
